This is a compulsory course .In order to learn it well. You should pay attention to the following:

First, follow the historical development of British Literature. According to historical development, British literature can be roughly divided into 7 periods (see III).Each period bears its typical features. To be clear of the chronological order will enable you to grasp the evolution of British literature macroscopically .The historical division of a literature is often coincided with its historical events, so to know the history of England is conducive to literature.

Second, be familiar with the characteristics of each period. This will help you to understand the styles, themes and subject-matters the writers under discussion. For example, to know the features of Victorian novels is useful for you to understand the novels of Charles Dickens, George Eliot, etc.

Third, read and appreciate the selected works. Focus on the understanding of the readings. First of all you should know what the writer is talking about(theme and subject-matter);second, know his style and language; then, try to interpret his works in terms of literary theory.

Last, know something about literary criticism.
